How Are English Names Written in Arabic?

Arabic writes consonants and long vowels as letters, but most short vowels are not written. So the Arabic spelling of a name is often shorter than the English one.

Only the written Arabic letters are counted. Here are two examples:

Fatima is written فاطمة: ف (80) + ا (1) + ط (9) + م (40) + ه (5) = 135.
Abdul Rahman is written عبد الرحمن: ع (70) + ب (2) + د (4) + ا (1) + ل (30) + ر (200) + ح (8) + م (40) + ن (50) = 405.

English spellings vary a lot. Muhammad, Mohammed and Mohamed are the same Arabic name, محمد, so they all give 92.

The tool recognizes more than 2,300 English spellings of 1,098 names. The guide to writing your name in Arabic explains how sounds map to letters.

Why Do Some Names Have Two Arabic Spellings?

Two different Arabic names can sound alike in English. Rashid can be رشيد (514) or راشد (505), so the tool shows both and you choose.

Some names also have more than one accepted spelling. Aisha is usually written عائشة (386), and sometimes عايشة (386).

Why Do Short Vowels Not Count?

Short vowel marks such as fatha, kasra and damma sit above or below letters. They are not letters, so they carry no Abjad value. The shadda doubling mark is not counted either.

How Is the Standalone Hamza Handled?

A hamza written on its own line (ء) is not counted in this calculator. Asma is written اسماء, which gives 102.

Some calculators count the standalone hamza as 1, which gives one more. A hamza written on alif, waw or ya takes the value of that letter.

What About Names From Other Languages?

A name that is not in the list still gets a suggested spelling built from its English sounds. It is marked as not checked, because English letters do not map one to one onto Arabic letters.

Check it with someone who reads Arabic, or correct it with the keypad.

Tip: an Urdu or Arabic document is the best guide to your name’s letters. A birth certificate is a good place to check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I find the Abjad value of my name without an Arabic keyboard?

Yes. Type your name in English letters and the tool shows its usual Arabic spelling, then adds the letter values. For example, Muhammad is written محمد and its value is 92.

Does my English spelling change the value?

No. The value comes from the Arabic letters, not the English ones. Muhammad, Mohammed and Mohamed are all written محمد, so all three give 92.

Why does my name show two different values?

Some English spellings fit two different Arabic names. Rashid can be رشيد (514) or راشد (505). Choose the spelling your family uses, or check a birth certificate or Arabic document.

What if my name is not in the list?

The tool builds a suggested spelling from the English letters and marks it as not checked. You can correct it letter by letter with the on-screen Arabic keypad before reading the value.

Is a higher or lower Abjad value better?

No. An Abjad value is a property of the spelling, not a measure of good or bad. This tool reports the arithmetic only.
