How to Calculate the Value of a Name by Hand

To calculate a name by hand, you need a sheet of paper, a pen and a letter chart. Write the letters, write each value under its letter, and add as you go. The name احمد (Ahmad) comes to 53 on paper in under a minute.

What Do You Need to Calculate by Hand?

Four small things are enough. Gather them before you write the first letter.

  • A letter chart. Print the printable Abjad chart and keep it beside the page.
  • The name in Urdu or Arabic script. Copy it from a document, so the spelling is exactly the one you want.
  • Paper with room. Squared paper keeps the columns straight.
  • A pen in a second color. Use it later to check your work.

If you want ready-made grids, the Abjad worksheet generator makes practice sheets. The complete rules for the system are on the calculation methods hub.

How Do You Set Out the Page?

A good layout does most of the work for you. Draw three rows: letters on top, their values in the middle, and a running total at the bottom.

Urdu and Arabic run from right to left, so start at the right edge. Put the first letter in the rightmost box and move left.

Each running total is the value above it plus the total before it.

What Are the Steps on Paper?

  1. Write the name large. Print each letter separately, leaving a gap between letters.
  2. Cross out the marks. Strike any vowel signs. They carry no value.
  3. Look up one letter at a time. Find it on the chart and write its value in the middle row.
  4. Carry a running total. Add each new value to the total before it, and write the result in the bottom row.
  5. Draw a box around the last total. This is the value of the name.
  6. Check with the second pen. Add again by a different route, as shown below.

Do not read the name aloud while you work. Sounds mislead you, and only the written letters count.

Worked Example: Ahmad

The name احمد has four letters: alif, ha, mim and dal. Here is the page after steps one to four.

ا 1 + ح 8 + م 40 + د 4 = 53

The running totals are 1, 9, 49, 53. The last one, 53, goes in the box.

Worked Example: Fatima

The name فاطمہ has five letters, and the last one is the Urdu ہ. It counts as he, which is 5.

ف 80 + ا 1 + ط 9 + م 40 + ہ 5 = 135

A running total for the name FatimaThe five letters of Fatima give running totals ending at 135.Add one letter at a time and write the total under itف8080ا181ط990م40130ہ5135Start with 80, then add each value in turn. The last chip is the answer, 135.
Writing every step makes a slip easy to find.

Notice how each chip depends on the one before it. If one chip is wrong, every chip after it is wrong too.

Tip: keep the running total in its own row. Mixing it into the values row is the most common way to lose your place.

Worked Example: A Two-Word Name

Some names are written as two words, such as عبد الرحمن (Abdul Rahman). Total each word on its own line first, then add the two totals.

ع 70 + ب 2 + د 4 = 76

ا 1 + ل 30 + ر 200 + ح 8 + م 40 + ن 50 = 329

The words give 76 and 329, so the name totals 405. The space between the words has no value.

Why Does a Running Total Help?

A running total turns one long sum into many tiny ones. Each step adds only two numbers, which is easy to do in your head.

It also leaves a trail. If the answer looks wrong, read back along the row. The first chip that does not fit is your slip.

Pencil and eraser work well for this, but ink is better for learning. A crossed-out slip shows you which kind of mistake you tend to make.

How Can You Add Faster and Safer?

Long names have many values, and adding them left to right invites slips. Sort the values by place instead.

  • Hundreds first. Add all values of 100 or more.
  • Then tens. Add the values from 10 to 90.
  • Then ones. Add the values from 1 to 9, and combine the three sums.
Adding by place valueThe letter values of Abdul Rahman sorted into hundreds, tens and ones add up to 405.Hundreds200= 200Tens70 + 30 + 40 + 50= 190Ones2 + 4 + 1 + 8= 15200 + 190 + 15 = 405
Sorting by place gives short sums and a second route to the same total.

The same name gave 405 by word totals and by place value. When two routes agree, you can be confident in the answer.

How Do You Check Your Total by Hand?

Add in the other direction

Add the values from the bottom of the list to the top, or from left to right. Addition gives the same total in any order, so both results must match.

Cast out nines

This old accountant’s trick catches most slips. Add the digits of each value, and repeat until one digit is left.

For احمد, the values 1, 8, 40, 4 reduce to 1, 8, 4, 4. Those add to 17, which reduces to 8. The total 53 also reduces to 8, so the sum passes.

The test is a screen, not a proof. It can miss swapped digits, such as writing 35 for 53.

Compare with the calculator

Finally, enter the name in the Abjad value calculator. It lists every letter it counted, so you can find a mismatch quickly.

How Do You Lay Out a Longer Name?

A full name needs one block per word. Give each word its own set of three rows, and keep a small box on the side for its subtotal.

Take احمد علی خان, which is Ahmad Ali Khan. The three words give 53, 110, 651, and together they total 814.

ا 1 + ح 8 + م 40 + د 4 = 53

ع 70 + ل 30 + ی 10 = 110

خ 600 + ا 1 + ن 50 = 651

Add the three subtotals last, and write the grand total on its own line. If you later need the value of one word alone, it is already on the page.

Does Handwriting Change the Letters?

Urdu and Arabic letters change shape depending on their place in a word. A letter at the start looks different from the same letter at the end, but its value never changes.

This matters most when you copy a name from a handwritten note. Take your time with these points.

  • Joined letters. Separate the word into single letters before you look anything up.
  • Final forms. A final ن or م is still 50 or 40.
  • Dots. Count the dots above and below each shape before you decide which letter it is.
  • Unclear writing. Ask the writer, or use a printed copy of the name.

How Can Teachers and Parents Use This With Children?

Hand calculation is a gentle way to practice addition and letter recognition together. Children enjoy it because the answer is a number they can check themselves.

  1. Start with the child’s own name. A familiar name makes the chart easier to learn.
  2. Swap pages. Each child checks a partner’s work with the second pen.
  3. Compare totals. Discuss why two spellings of the same name can differ.

Keep the tone light and treat the totals as arithmetic practice. The total is a number, and it says nothing about the person.

When Should You Switch to a Calculator?

By hand is the best way to learn, and a fine way to work with short names. For a long phrase or a list of fifty names, a tool saves time and avoids slips.

You can also use both together. Calculate the name on paper, then confirm it on screen, and note any letter where the two disagree.

How Do You Learn the Values So You Look Up Less?

Looking up every letter is slow at first. After a few names, you will know the common ones without the chart.

The memory words in Abjad Hawwaz Hutti give the letter order, and the order gives the values. Start with the letters your own name uses.

Which Slips Happen Most on Paper?

Handwriting adds its own mistakes to the usual ones. Watch for these four.

  • Misreading a dot. Ba, ta and tha differ only by dots, and their values are 2, 400 and 500.
  • Skipping a letter. Count the boxes in the letters row against the letters in the name.
  • Copying a value wrongly. Read 80 as 8 and the whole total changes.
  • Counting a vowel mark. Cross the marks out in step two so they cannot sneak in.

If your answer still differs from a printed value, the cause is often the spelling or the system. See why two calculators give different values for how to trace it.

What Should You Write Down as a Record?

A bare number is hard to trust a month later. A short note under the box makes the result repeatable.

  • The name as spelled. Copy the exact letters, including any hamza or final he.
  • The system. Write Mashriqi unless you were told otherwise.
  • The date and the source. Note where the spelling came from.

With this note, anyone can repeat your page and reach the same total. It also helps when a relative asks why your answer differs from another one.

What Is a Good Way to Practice?

Short and regular practice works better than one long session. Ten minutes a day is enough to know the whole chart within a few weeks.

Begin with names of two or three letters, then move to four and five. When you can finish a name without the chart, try a two-word name for a harder test.

What Do the Three Examples Show?

The three names worked above (Mashriqi values).
NameRomanWhat to noticeTotal
احمدAhmadFour letters, no special forms53
فاطمہFatimaEnds in he, which counts 5135
عبد الرحمنAbdul RahmanTwo words, added word by word405

Can You Try Three More Names?

Work each name on your own page with the three rows. Then open the answer and compare your running totals.

بلال (Bilal)

ب 2 + ل 30 + ا 1 + ل 30 = 63

کریم (Karim)

ک 20 + ر 200 + ی 10 + م 40 = 270

نور (Noor)

ن 50 + و 6 + ر 200 = 256

Where Should You Go Next?

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I start from the right or the left?

Start from the right, as the script runs. The total is the same either way, but right to left keeps your page in reading order.

Do I need to know Arabic to do this?

No. You only need to match each written letter to the chart. Copy the name in script and look up each shape.

How long does a name take by hand?

A short name takes about a minute once you have the chart. A full name with several words takes a few minutes.

Does the order of the words change the total?

No. Addition gives the same result in any order, so a name and its words rearranged share one value.

What if I have only the English spelling?

Write it in Urdu or Arabic script first. The English letters have no abjad values of their own.
